Fall is approaching fast! And with the change in season, comes a change in wardrobes, bed linens and maybe even the spices we add to our dishes – making this the perfect time to clean out the closets and get organized. Check out these 3 closet organization ideas to help save and maybe even earn you money:

Closet Organization - Organized and neat closet with both men's and women's clothing.

Closet Organization Idea # 1:

Purge everything that is outdated, no longer fits, is showing wear and tear or you haven’t touched it in years – this also applies to linens, cosmetics, spices and small kitchen appliances as well.

Make money off of your unwanted goods by holding a garage sale, selling them to a resale shop or earning a tax deduction by donating to a charitable organization.

Bonus Tip – Before adding shelves, rods or hooks give your closet a deep cleaning – and maybe even a new coat of paint to help spruce it up.

Closet Organization Idea #2:

Once your closets and/or cabinets are bare you’ll need to calculate how much space you have and how much you will need to store your items.

  • Get started by grabbing a measuring tape to determine the width, height and depth of your closet space.
  • Next count how many items will be hung on hangers and multiple by 1 inch. For example, 25 pieces of clothing would take up 25 inches on the closet rod. Suits and winter fabrics will take up more space, so plan accordingly.
  • Stack tee-shirts, sweaters and jeans to determine how much shelving you will need – to avoid spills when reaching for an item limit each stack to 3-4 pieces.
  • Don’t forget shoes, handbags, accessories and other items that will need to find a home in your re-organized closet.

You’ll save time and money by determining what is needed at the beginning of your closet organization project by avoiding unnecessary purchases.

Closet Organization Idea #3:

One stop shop to save money when you purchase your closet organization supplies at discount stores like Target or online retailers such as Organize-It to purchase everything from shelving to shoe storage.

Save even more when you download and use Target’s cartwheel™ app.
